After a quick Thanksgiving break, my students are starting December by learning all about snow, winter, and cold weather. Despite the weather actually being in the upper 40s and 50s, we have enjoyed this theme as a prelude to the holidays! This theme has also led us to talk about the weather each day, as well as what clothing we wear in the winter versus the summer.
My students enjoyed glitter painting on snowflakes to reinforce concepts learned this week. Painting also served as a great reinforcer in between drill based targets. Foam templates were found for just a dollar at the dollar store!
Another big hit this week was “Penguin Pile Up”.
The object of this game is to balance as many penguins as possible on a very wobbly iceberg. This game was lots of fun and promoted a lot of discussion about penguins and cold weather, as well as social language and turn taking. This game is available on Amazon here.
Of course, I wouldn’t be able to get through a theme without including books. The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg was a great book to accompany this theme. This book also helped introduce upcoming holiday vocabulary including “presents,” “reindeer,” “sleigh,” “hot cocoa,” and of course, “Santa”. I am looking forward to starting holiday themes next week!
